He was the son-in-law of Charles Collier Michell, having married in Cape Town on 25 October 1837 his daughter Eveline Marie, born 16 April 1821.
Historic buildings in the area include the Rondebosch Town Hall, now occupied by the Rondebosch branch of the City Libraries, and St. Paul's Church, which was designed by Charles Collier Michell.
Starting in 1828, a new pass was constructed on the current route, about 2 km to the south of the Hottentots Holland Kloof, by the engineer Charles Michell using convict labour.
