Miss Hall was the daughter and heir of noted Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall.
The first attempt using the 95-ton schooner Active was abandoned, probably due to lack of finances caused by the American Civil War and the failed relationship with his intended second in command Parker Snow.
On this first trip, he received permission to disinter the body of Charles Francis Hall, a Cincinnati journalist who in had made two attempts (1860–63 and 1864–69) to find the grave of Sir John Franklin, and who himself died in the course of an 1871 attempt to reach the North Pole.
