In 1735, actor Charles Macklin got into a quarrel with Thomas Hallam (another actor) over a wig and killed the other actor in the green room by accidentally thrusting his cane through Hallam's eye at Drury Lane.
He was tutored by Charles Macklin, and debuted as Othello at London's Covent Garden on 4 March 1779 to an ill-received performance.
Foote wrote the nonsense poem to test the memory of the actor Charles Macklin, who had claimed he could read any paragraph once through and then recite it verbatim.
