Originally, the fund supported the departments of Literature, Language, Philosophy and History at the University of Cincinnati, together with Economics and Mathematics.

The Center was founded in 1930 by Anna Sinton Taft in memory of her husband, Charles Phelps Taft.

A Board of Trustees is composed of several individuals, including members of the Taft family.
