Within days of this posting however Sackville-West was wounded in the jaw when a high-explosive shell detonated in the midst of his command group as he inspected the trenches in front of Hamel.

In 1918-9, as an ally of the CIGS Henry Wilson, he served on the Supreme War Council and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a Companion of the Order of the Bath by 1921.

In 1919, he was British Military Representative on the Supreme War Council and from 1920 to 1924 he was military attaché in Paris.

After a second grand tour to continental Europe in 1737 and 1738, he returned to England in January 1739 and staged an opera, Angelico e Medoro, with music by Giovanni Battista Pescetti from a libretto by Metastasio at Covent Garden.

For the 1741–42 season he entered into partnership with seven other noblemen (the second Opera of the Nobility) and they were able to continue for three years at the King's Theatre, Haymarket.
