The plot collapsed in England in the spring of 1722, at the time of the death of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, who a year before had been forced to resign as First Lord of the Treasury.
He was the son of William Spencer (1769–1834), younger son of Lord Charles Spencer, and a great-grandson of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough; his German mother Susan being a Countess of the Holy Roman Empire.
Members include print journalists from newspapers and magazines, as well as those from radio and television from around the Midlands, while several prominent figures have been inducted as honorary members, including journalists Ludovic Kennedy and Michael Parkinson, as well as Earl Spencer, the brother of Diana, Princess of Wales, and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

About this time Mr. Brereton obtained from Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland a post belonging to the customs at Parkgate, Cheshire, but in February 1722, he was unfortunately drowned in the River Dee at Saltney, when the tide was coming in.
