The Chicago Produce Exchange was established in 1874, renamed the Chicago Butter and Egg Board in 1898 and then reorganised into the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) in 1919.

In March 2007 ICE made an unsuccessful $9.9 billion bid for the Chicago Board of Trade, which was instead acquired by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Upon retiring, Rich initially used his civil engineering degree, working for a time on what was to become Willis Tower and became a commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
He formally held the positions of President and CEO of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (1985–1997) and was the Executive Vice President at the American Stock Exchange (1979–1982).
