At the behest of one of his patients, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, who was then Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, he studied the objects which had been recovered from the tomb of Childeric I.
Junghans is remembered for his 1856 work involving the Merovingian kings- Childeric I and Clovis I, titled Die Geschichte der fränkischen Könige Childerich und Chlodovech, kritisch untersucht.
