Purser

The development of the warrant officer system began in 1040 when five English ports began furnishing warships to King Edward the Confessor in exchange for certain privileges, they also furnished crews whose officers were the Master, Boatswain, Carpenter and Cook.


1703 in Ireland

11 September - A privateering expedition comprising the ships St George and Cinque Ports commanded by William Dampier leaves Kinsale for South America.

Selkirk, a sailor with the Dampier expedition, was worried about the unseaworthy condition of his ship, the Cinque Ports, and had argued with the captain until he left him ashore on the island where they had briefly stopped for water and food supplies.

Matthew Brettingham the Younger

The value of the appointment fell after the passage of the Civil List and Secret Service Money Act 1782, and North appointed Brettingham deputy revenue collector of the Cinque Ports, an office which yielded an income of several hundred pounds a year.
