Involved from 1980 with the Citizens Party of environmentalist Barry Commoner, Walton was the party's vice-presidential candidate in 1984 on a ticket headed by feminist Sonia Johnson as the party's presidential candidate.
In 1980, Bouricius was part of the group of people associated with the Citizens Party and the presidential candidacy of Barry Commoner, which became the Vermont Progressive Party, and associated with the successful independent campaign of Bernie Sanders for mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
He was a member of the Christian Social Party before World War I, and thereafter of the Citizens’ Party.
