It came into existence in Ireland in the 12th and 13th centuries and was continued by the Church of Ireland, the established church, from the time of the Tudor conquest.
The city comprised parts of four parishes, and the new county covered the whole of each, with the area outside the borough forming the "liberties" of the city.

The townland of Carrickmore is situated in the historic barony of Omagh East and the civil parish of Termonmaguirk and covers an area of 915 acres.
