The thrips species Liothrips urichi from Trinidad is being used to biologically control C. hirta; it was first employed on Fiji in 1930 (Simmonds, 1933).
The Clidemia thrips Liothrips urichi is used as a control agent to stop the spread of Clidemia hirta in Hawai'i.
The habitat is threatened with degradation and destruction by a number of forces, especially feral pigs and exotic plant species such as Chinese ground orchid (Phaius tancarvilleae) and Koster's curse (Clidemia hirta).
