During this time he developed a song-writing partnership with Boo Hewerdine, founder member of The Bible.

In 1985 he released the first of eight solo albums and around the same time he partnered up with vocalist, Christine Collister.
The album was followed by 1991's Blue Line which was produced in London by Clive Gregson, and features B.J. Cole on pedal steel.
