1868 in Australia

12 March — Henry James O'Farrell fires a revolver into the back of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (second son of Queen Victoria) while the latter is picnicking in the beachfront suburb of Clontarf.

Charles Coote, 1st Earl of Mountrath

The elder Charles Coote was active in the suppression of the Irish insurgents in 1642, launching attacks on Clontarf and County Wicklow in late 1641 in which many civilians died; he was killed in action defending Trim in May 1642.

Foster Fyans

Fyans was baptised at Clontarf, Dublin and joined the British Army in 1810, seeing service in the Peninsula War.

Late on the night of 26 February, Travers, whose father is a member of the Garda Síochána based at Clontarf, was alone watching television at the home of his girlfriend near Kilteel, County Kildare.
