Built between 1995 and 1997, the stadium hosted its first match on March 6, 1997 in a game between LDU Quito and Atlético Mineiro of Belo Horizonte.
The stadium was also the neutral ground used by CONMEBOL in the 1981 Copa Libertadores group stage replay match between Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro, in which Flamengo was declared the winner by CONMEBOL, after five Atlético Mineiro players were sent off by referee José Roberto Wright.
In 2010 and 2011, Arena do Jacaré serves as a home stadium for Atlético-MG, Cruzeiro and América-MG, as both Belo Horizonte stadia - Mineirão and Independência - are going through reforms.
Yale eventually split and part of it became the Palestra Itália of Minas, a team which was created to compete with many of the bigger teams in Belo Horizonte like America, Atlético, and Yale itself.
