Betty's Hope was built in 1674 by Sir Christopher Codrington, the namesake of Codrington, and was named for his daughter, Elizabeth Codrington.

Codrington was not selected for either the 2005 ICC Trophy or the 2005 ICC Intercontinental Cup, but did return to the Canadian team in August 2006 for the ODIs against Bermuda and the subsequent ICC Americas Championship tournament.
It flourished as a successful agricultural industrial enterprise (because the workforce, being forcibly imported African slaves, were unpaid), the first large-scale sugar plantation to operate in Antigua, starting with Codrington family's ownership in 1674, which lasted till 1944.
Sir Edward Codrington, son of Edward Codrington, younger brother of Christopher Bethell-Codrington, was an Admiral in the Royal Navy and a hero of the Battle of Trafalgar.
After captaining Barbados in an inter-island under 21 competition in the West Indies, George Codrington first came to England in 1986 as part of a Viv Richards scholarship with Curtly Ambrose and Samuel Skeete.
A contestant on Season 3 of the boxing reality television series The Contender, Codrington went on to lose in the final to Sakio Bika, in a brave effort and a candidate for fight of the year.
He is married to the photographer Tessa Codrington, by whom he has three daughters, including model Jacquetta Wheeler.

Codrington died on 6 August 1884, in his eightieth year, at Danmore Cottage, Heckfield, Winchfield in Hampshire.
