The barracks are situated at the southern edge of the city, south of Colinton, and adjacent to the Edinburgh City Bypass.
During their occupancy of Colinton the Balfours built stockyards on the north bank of Greenhide Creek near its junction with the Brisbane River.
South the volcanics also follow the Monaro Highway in a more complex band through Colinton past Michelago and at least as far south as Bredbo.
