Lord Colonsay died at Pau, France, on 31 January 1874, aged 80, when the title became extinct.
The 1945 film I Know Where I'm Going! directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger was principally shot on Mull using Carsaig as a headquarters and references the fictional "Isle of Kiloran", which was based on Colonsay.
In the space of a few months the overturned Campbell control of hereditary MacDonald lands in Islay, Jura Colonsay and Kintyre, but fled to Ireland when Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll, led an army against them.
