He was the founding editor of the Il Progresso Italo-Americano Italian-American newspaper, and used its pages to raise funds for this and several other memorials including the Columbus Circle monument, an 1888 monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi in Washington Square Park, a monument to Giovanni da Verrazzano (1909) and the 1921 monument to Dante Alighieri in Dante Square.
These buses were then ferried across the Hudson River to Manhattan Island, where they proceeded to various "stations" including the Vanderbilt Hotel, Wanamaker's, Columbus Circle, and Rockefeller Center, as well as into Brooklyn.
Nishi has built his fabricated hotels and apartments around historical monuments in Europe, Australia, Singapore and most recently in Columbus Circle in Manhattan, New York City: a penthouse apartment surrounding Gaetano Russo's statue of Christopher Columbus.
November 2003 – The Preservation League of New York State listed 2 Columbus Circle among its "Seven to Save" sites, prompting artist Chuck Close to write, "I have always enjoyed this distinctive and delightful building with its opaque white facades and punched out hole windows."
