After leaving the US army, where he received the Combat Infantryman Badge, he graduated from high school and attended college on the G.I. Bill.
Among his awards are the Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Grenada), and the National Defense Service Medal.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a scout in the infantry from 1943–46 and he received Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart.
