2 unusual facts about Computer architecture

Daniel Slotnick

Daniel Leonid Slotnick (1931–1985) was a mathematician and computer architect.

Fusion File System

It uses a layered device driver architecture, using a simple binding model, to allow operating system agnostic or independent portability; meaning that the file system is compatible with most operating systems and is thus not bound to any one RTOS.

Bruce Shriver

He currently is a Professor-at-Large in the Computer Science at the University of Tromsø in Norway where he teaches graduate courses in Computer Architecture and Computer Systems Organization.

Federico Luigi Menabrea

Among his notable publications: Sketch of the Analytical Engine Invented by Charles Babbage, Esq. with notes by translator Ada Lovelace (1842), which described many aspects of computer architecture and programming.

Steven Muchnick

He then went on to apply his knowledge of compilers as a vital member of the teams that developed two computer architectures — PA-RISC at Hewlett-Packard and SPARC at Sun Microsystems.

Code as data

Von Neumann architecture, a computer architecture that stores program code and data in the same memory device.

MicroBlaze

In terms of its instruction-set architecture, MicroBlaze is very similar to the RISC-based DLX architecture described in a popular computer architecture book by Patterson and Hennessy.

Voltage and frequency scaling

Dynamic frequency scaling, a technique in computer architecture whereby the frequency of a microprocessor can be automatically adjusted "on the fly," either to conserve power or to reduce the amount of heat generated by the chip

Dynamic voltage scaling, a power management technique in computer architecture, where the voltage used in a component is increased or decreased, depending upon circumstances
