While the bulk of the music is hard-bop jazz, Jan Hammer's electric piano brings in a distinct jazz fusion flavour, and the congas and percussions add an element of Latin and World jazz.

In 1966, his band which included timbales, congas, sometimes bongos, bass, vibraphones, and the piano among its musical instruments, scored a "hit" in the United States National Hit Parade List with the song "Bang Bang" - which helped kick off the popularity of the boogaloo.

The band got picked up by a record label in Los Angeles called Alive/ Total Energy, an affiliate of Bomp! Records, and in 2004, they recorded their first album, "Free Energy", at RetroFit Studios with engineer Tony C. It also featured Celeste M from the San Francisco band Dura Delinquent on sax, and Tony C on congas.
