In September 2006, to great critical acclaim, McPherson made his National Theatre debut as both author and director with The Seafarer at the Cottesloe auditorium, starring Karl Johnson and Jim Norton, with Ron Cook as their poker-playing, Mephistophelean guest.

He is the director and co-writer of The Eclipse, a film which had its world premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.
During this time, he premiered 65 new plays including early works by Billy Roche, Philip Ridley, Catherine Johnson, Sebastian Barry, Jonathan Harvey, Helen Edmundson, Simon Bent, Naomi Wallace, Irvine Welsh, David Harrower, Samuel Adamson and Conor McPherson.

He directed the American premiere of Conor McPherson's Shining City on Broadway, starring Oliver Platt; both the production and Platt's performance were nominated for 2006 Tony Awards.
Rhapsody of Words presented a revival of Conor McPherson's play Port Authority at the Southwark Playhouse in 2012, starring Ardal O'Hanlon, John Rogan and Andrew Nolan.
