In 1916 he moved to Chardstock in Devonshire and started painting again, mostly colorful English landscapes.

After his release from hospital he was reunited with his family in Folkestone, where his son John was born.

The reputation of this contest is based on the value of the contest's jurys and its award winners, whose some are internationally recognized, like Victor Horta, Pierre Alechinsky, Emile Claus, Paul Delvaux, Léon Frédéric, Victor Horta, Fernand Khnopff or … Constant Permeke.
Delvaux's paintings of the late 1920s and early 1930s, which feature nudes in landscapes, are strongly influenced by such Flemish Expressionists as Constant Permeke and Gustave De Smet.
