A smaller site at Girvan, South Ayrshire, now occupied by Grant's distillery, produced cordite and TNT.

In 1937-39, anti-aircraft rockets, using 3-inch tubular charges produced by the Royal Naval Cordite Factory, Holton Heath, were tested at the fort by the Explosives Research Department of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich.
Some Royal Navy ships like the Royal Sovereign-class battleships were commissioned with the already obsolete SBC-based guns, but the subsequent Majestic and Canopus-class battleships were the first to adopt Cordite Mk I.
