In the early 18th century, the Coree and several other tribes were allied with the Iroquoian Tuscarora against the colonists.

On the other hand, the Coree occupied territory that was historically mostly that of Tuscaroras, which suggests they were affiliated with these peoples.
Coree |
Historians generally contend that the Coharie are descendants of the Iroquoian-speaking Neusiok and Coree, as well as the Iroquoian Tuscarora, and the Siouan Waccamaw, who occupied what is now the central portion of North Carolina.
Swanton (1940) proposed a connection with the Sugaree or Shakori; Rudes (2004) suggested Coree.
