He was born in 1856 to L. Harris Hiscock, a lawyer and assemblymen who founded the Hiscock & Barclay law firm in Syracuse, New York, and who was murdered on 4 June 1867, by General George W. Cole, a brother of Cornelius Cole.
Higher education was not available in Cananea so she was sent to the Marlborough School for Girls located in Los Angeles, where other Cole family members resided, including her great-granduncle U.S. Senator Cornelius Cole.
