Some survivors escaped to Corregidor Island in Manila Bay, Philippine Islands and surrendered on 6 May 1942, ending all US organized resistance to the Japanese in the Philippines.
While assisting minesweeping operations prior to landings on Manila Bay's Corregidor Island, Fletcher was hit by an enemy shell which penetrated the No. 1 gun magazine, igniting several powder cases.
The fortification on Corregidor Island, the Philippines, was designated a United States Military Reservation in 1907 and named Fort Mills in Brigadier General Mills's honor.
