The area is named after Sir Herbert Cory, former Conservative MP of Cardiff and one of the Cory baronets, coal mining and ship owning capitalists.

Air Chief Marshal Sir William Alec Coryton KCB, KBE, MVO, DFC, RAF (16 February 1895 – 20 October 1981), commonly known as Alec Coryton, was a senior RAF commander in World War II.
In 2002 Calor opened 12 Customer Operations Centres at Grangemouth, Port Clarence, Stoney Stanton, Elland, Ellesmere Port, Coryton, Cranbrook, Saxham, Fawley, Neath and Newbury.
The CLR ran from a junction with the LTSR near Thames Haven to the Kynoch explosives works at Shell Haven, with branches east to Kynochtown (later Coryton) and west to Corringham.
