Howard Brubaker (d. 1957) was an editor of Success and Liberator and a contributor to the New Yorker, Collier's Weekly, The New Republic, Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, and many other magazines.
By the 1920s, Bennett was actively writing about soil erosion for popular magazines and scientific journals, with works appearing in publications like Country Gentleman and Scientific Monthly.
As a result, he moved to the country, Great Canfield in Essex, and began to write on rural matters for the Country Gentleman, World's Work and The Field.

Returning to Virginia, Ravenscroft lived as a country gentleman at Spring Bank in Lunenburg County for eighteen years, during which period he reportedly "never bent his knees in prayer, nor did he once open a Bible."
