General Innes sold the house in 1870 and, thereafter, it changed hands every few years and served as the residence of famous persons, including Sir Courtenay Ilbert, General Pemberton, General Sir C. E. Nairne, Surgeon-General Bradshaw, Surgeon-General Cleghorn and so on.

Courtenay Ilbert

Ilbert was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was Hertford, Ireland, Craven, and Eldon law scholar.

Ilbert Bill

It was named after Courtenay Ilbert, the recently appointed legal adviser to the Council of India, who had proposed it as a compromise between two previously suggested bills.
