The land was created from spoil from the Channel Tunnel, and rock samphire used to be harvested from the neighbouring cliffs.

The larvae feed on various herbaceous plants, including Thapsia, Ferrula, Crithmum, Ligustrum, Laserpitium and Foeniculum species.
The tops of the formations are dotted with plants resistant to salt spray, such as Wormleaf Saltwort and Rock Samphire, which survive and grow on the rocks because the tops are well above the high tide level.
