In 1774 they built Cumberland House on the Saskatchewan River delta and soon had outposts situated throughout the northwest, in some cases directly across from their adversaries, sparking a period of severe competition.

The appellation York House has been applied at various times to other houses occupied by various Dukes of York, including those now known as Cumberland House, Dover House, Lancaster House and The Albany.
Cumberland House was established in 1774, and was an important stop for the transport of good and passengers by steamship along the Saskatchewan River on routes between Grand Rapids, Manitoba on Lake Winnipeg and Edmonton and Medicine Hat to the west.
