She has continued her singing career and remains active across the country, not only as a member of the Grammy winning gospel group Sounds of Blackness and as a musician on many albums of other artists such as Maceo Parker, Prince, or producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, but also as the invisible voice behind many brand-name products in popular commercials of brands such as 3M, Volkswagen, Target or Ford.

She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, Morris, in 1978.

Johnson was the lead singer of the popular Minneapolis-based band Lipps Inc., best known for their 1980 song "Funkytown," which would become their only U.S. Top 40 hit.
