The podium display after the 2006 Turkish Grand Prix caused a controversy, when winner Felipe Massa received the trophy from Mehmet Ali Talat, who was referred to as the "President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus."
Cyprus and Turkey, another participant, never voted for each other until 2003, a taboo attributed to the ongoing Cyprus dispute.
The group also campaigns for 1964 to be recognised as the start of the embargoes, this being the year of the breakdown of the power sharing between Greek and Turkish Cypriots (see Cyprus dispute).
Due to the Cyprus dispute, Northern Cyprus is only recognised by the EU candidate state Turkey.

Under the terms of the Annan Plan for Cyprus, a United Nations proposal to settle the Cyprus dispute, a new national flag would have been adopted by a reconstituted confederal republic of Cyprus.
