The farm is near Steele's Tavern, Virginia and Raphine, Virginia, close to the northern border of Rockbridge County, Virginia and Augusta County, Virginia, and is currently a museum run by the Virginia Agricultural Experimental Station of Virginia Tech.
SR 56 begins at an intersection with US 11 (Lee Highway) at Steeles Tavern a short distance east of the historic Cyrus McCormick Farm.

He was the fourth of five sons and was raised at the family homestead known as Walnut Grove, near Raphine in Rockbridge County, in the Shenandoah Valley on the western side of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
