8 unusual facts about DREAM Act

Gerardo Sandoval

Sandoval introduced a resolution "condemning the defamatory language used by talk radio host Michael Savage" after Savage criticized illegal alien protesters who were fasting in support of the controversial DREAM Act, which would give qualifying illegal aliens a path to US citizenship as well as enable them to receive tax payer funded in-state college tuition.

Jose Antonio Vargas

Vargas founded "Define American" in 2011, a non-profit project aimed at facilitating dialogue about immigration issues including the DREAM Act, which would allow undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship through education or service in the military.

It was also a way to advocate for the DREAM Act, which would help children in similar circumstances have a path to citizenship.

Prerna Lal

While the DREAM Act failed to pass the Senate in 2010, Lal's organization continued to push for executive action to stop the deportations of undocumented youth, and was rewarded when President Obama announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in 2012.

Through the use of social media, Lal helped build DreamActivist and United We DREAM into a nation-wide network of undocumented youth who organized to push for the DREAM Act and worked to stop deportations.

Ricardo Montano

The Newsday editorial board judged the two candidates' positions on supporting the DREAM Act, lowering property taxes, and reducing unfunded state mandates to be similar.

Richard Mourdock

Mourdock opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants and opposes the DREAM Act.

Timothy J. Toomey, Jr.

In August 2010, Toomey submitted a resolution to the Cambridge City Council in support of the DREAM Act, which was adopted by the membership.
