After some time she was expelled from the party for her declaration of admiration to the former neo-fascist politician Gianfranco Fini, leader of centre-right party Alleanza Nazionale.

As an activist of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), Valent was candidated with the support of the then Secretary Achille Occhetto to the European Parliament and was elected in the 1989 elections with about 76,000 votes.
In the 1994 general election the FSI formed a joint list with the Italian Democratic Socialist Party (PSDI), led by Enrico Ferri, and some independents, notably including Dacia Valent.
