Shortly after the film's online release, bloggers and newspapers familiar with indie comics noticed its resemblance to Justin M. Damiano, a 2007 comic by Ghost World author Daniel Clowes from the anthology The Book of Other People.
In his review in the New York Times following the 2009 Broadway opening, Ben Brantley observed, "The notion that personality is fragile, always on the edge of decomposition, is exquisitely reflected in Ms. Damiano’s astringent, poignant Natalie".
While Damiano may have been more noted for the Caballero studios' project Deep Throat, he created Let My Puppets Come using both human and puppet actors, and was perhaps the first of its kind in the United States.
The film pays homage to both Damiano's previous skin flick The Devil in Miss Jones and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
In 1881 at Turin, he exhibited: Arnaldo da Brescia and Pope Adrian IV; at the 1887 National Exhibition at Venice, he displayed the San Pier Damiano canvas, and a Portrait del mio maestro.
