Through 1972-1981, in partnership with Bernie Fiedler, he managed the careers of Abramson, Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan and Dan Hill.
Another one of his hit songs was "It's a Long Road", which he recorded for the 1982 action movie First Blood.
In his fight against discrimination, Burnett, a plain-spoken, determined activist, engaged the support of Toronto-based groups like the Joint Labour Committee on Human Rights, whose members included Donna Hill (wife of activist Daniel Hill and mother of author Lawrence Hill and singer Dan Hill) and prominent labour activist Bromley Armstrong.

Shortly after the 1980 follow-up "Manoeuvres", Gary formed the band Kid Rainbow, which included Margo Davidson, later of The Parachute Club and musician, producer, and songwriter John Jones (record producer) of Duran Duran Roy Wood, Fleetwood Mac, Dan Hill, Alan Frew, and Celine Dion.
In Toronto Capek played keyboards and arranged songs for Marc Jordan, Ian Thomas, Dan Hill and Dianne Brooks, and produced hit recordings for Hill, Ken Tobias, The Good Brothers, Downchild and Amy Sky.
