4 unusual facts about David Clyde

David Clyde

Clyde was praised by national publications such as Sports Illustrated and Newsweek prior to the 1973 MLB Draft, and was the consensus among scouts as the best player available in the draft.

He was named by journalist Randy Galloway as among the worst cases of "mishandling" a young player in baseball history.

In a 2003 interview with the Associated Press, Clyde looked back on his career, recognizing that he was rushed too early, calling his career "a classic case not to handle a young talent", and stating that his case had a "black side" to it but that he made a contribution to the sport.

Mike Loynd

Like the much heralded David Clyde in 1973, Loynd was expected to contribute immediately upon being called to the Majors.

Babe Birrer

Thanks to the persistent advocacy of former pitchers David Clyde and Gary Neibauer, as well as sportswriter Doug Gladstone, both MLB and the MLBPA announced in 2011 that all these inactive, non-vested men like Birrer and all of whom played between 1947 and 1979, would receive up to $10,000 per year.

Larry McCall

On January 4, 1980, McCall was traded by the Texas Rangers with Mike Bucci (minors) and Gary Gray to the Cleveland Indians for David Clyde and Jim Norris.
