David Gompert

Prior to leading the institute, Gompert was a special assistant to former President George H. W. Bush, as well as the senior director for Europe and Eurasia on the staff of the National Security Council from 1990 to 1993.

He held several positions at the State Department from 1975 to 1983, including deputy to the under secretary for political affairs, deputy director of the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs and special assistant to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

The appointment made Gompert the ODNI's second-highest-ranking official after Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper.
