Smythe was succeeded in the estate by Robert Smythe, only surviving son of his first marriage; when Robert died in 1847 without issue, the succession fell to the elder son of the second marriage, William Smythe (1805–1895) of Methven Castle.
George David Boyle was the eldest son of David Boyle, Lord Justice-General and President of the Court of Session in Scotland, by his second marriage with Camilla Catherine, eldest daughter of David Smythe, Lord Methven, and was born in 1828.
Lady Methven later married her son-in-law's father Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven.
