The area was scheduled to host the 17th Winter Deaflympics, but the event was cancelled because of the lack of readiness by the Slovakian Deaflympic Organizing Committee to host the games.
At the Congress of Comité International des Sports de Surds (now known as Deaflympics) during the Winter Deaflympics in Sundsvall, Sweden, in February 2003, the Congress officially decided to recognise the DIBF as an Associate Member.
