It was founded by Gene Ween and Dean Ween of the band Ween and run by their management company, Greg Frey Management.
Because Elektra Records released Paintin' the Town Brown, which was to be Ween's first online independent release, Dean Ween leaked the "album" to the Internet in 1999 to succor their fans and show them how much Ween appreciated them.
Fred recorded with a wide variety of musicians including; Daniel Lanois, Josh Homme, Queens of the Stone Age, Victoria Williams, Dave Grohl, Ted Quinn, Pete Stahl, Wool, Dean Ween and many others.
It featured drums by Kate and a guest guitar spot by Gabby (also of Luscious Jackson) as well as Gene and Dean Ween of Ween and was engineered/recorded by Josephine Wiggs, bass player of The Breeders, marking her first full length engineering project.
Many of the songs on this album come from two tapes that the band made for friends, the first being titled "Springtape", and the second titled "The Caprice Classic Tape", as stated by Dean Ween on JJJ radio in 1993.
