An image of Debbie Harry was captured in monochrome from a video camera and digitized into a graphics program called ProPaint.
The lyrics reference a number of female rock stars, such as Debbie Harry ("Callin me, all the time like Blondie") and Chrissie Hynde ("Check out my Chrissie behind"), and morally assertive slogans, such as "Stay in School" (SIS) which is also a reference to her being a teacher before becoming a musician.
The band's three principal songwriters, Deborah Harry, Chris Stein and Jimmy Destri instead recorded two solo projects; Harry and Stein the album Koo Koo with Chic's Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers and Destri his first solo album Heart on a Wall.

The 7" edit of "Backfired" appears on the Chrysalis Records/EMI compilation Most of All - The Best of Deborah Harry. A remix of the track by Bruce Forrest and Frank Heller was included on the 1988 Blondie/Debbie Harry remix compilation Once More into the Bleach. The original extended 12" mix from 1981 appears as a bonus track on both the 1994 and 2005 CD re-issues of the album Koo Koo.
The song "California Thing" appeared on the soundtrack of the film Heavy, starring Liv Tyler and Deborah Harry.
He also plays a main part in the film, along with artist and musician Walter Steding, as the pair walk through memories of New York in the punk era, talking to such figures as Deborah Harry, Maripol, John Lurie, Glenn O’Brien, etc. about the time.
He went on to produce a number of New York based indie features and prize winning shorts, working, amongst others, with Lisa Ray and Deborah Harry.
He has shared the stage with other notable acts such as Peaches, John Waters, Mystery Jets, Freezepop, Blowfly, Jan Terri, 2 Live Crew, Pam Hogg, Debbie Harry, The Hacker, Leslie Hall, Jeffree Star, Mount Sims, Electrosexual, Derek O'Brien, Don Bolles, Abby Travis and many others.
Mars went on to appear in many more films, including Drop Dead Rock with Debbie Harry and Adam Ant, Jennie Livingston's Who's the Top?, Venus Boyz, Mary Harron's The Notorious Bettie Page and a documentary based on her own life, The Dark Matter of Mars.
The song was performed on the fashion show Project Runway during the season 3 premiere, which aired October 25, 2013 and featured Debbie Harry as a guest judge.
They tweaked their look and sound and released a 2008 single, "When We Get Together", with a video clip featuring cameos from the Scissor Sisters, Debbie Harry, Jody Watley, Fischerspooner, Ultra Naté, Cazwell, Colton Ford, and many others.
The voice of the band's lead vocalist, Diana Quinn, has been described as evoking "early Deborah Harry -- sort of Blondie meets The Stooges or New York Dolls." TFI was part of DC's infant punk scene in the late 1970s/early 1980s.
