By July 10, 1976, all of the trees were dead from an attack by the southern pine beetle.
Host trees in the United States include primarily P. taeda, P. echinata, P. elliottii, P. virginiana, P. rigida, P. palustris, P. serotina, P. pungens and P. strobes, P. ponderosa, P. engelmannii and P. leiophylla.
The pine forest has been seriously damaged by the Southern Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis, with 80% of the trees showing signs of attack.
