When Devaki, the mother of Lord Krishna was still unwed, many princes competed for her hand in marriage including Somadatta and Sini who fought a great battle over her.
Because of his sympathy for the earth, the divine Vishnu himself descended into the womb of Devaki and was born as her son, Vaasudeva (i.e., Krishna).
Both Vasudev and Devaki after praising Vishnu requested him to hide his divine form agreeing to which Vishnu transformed himself into a small human baby.
