It is located in the Dorćol in the municipality of Stari Grad. Like all Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and churches it is named after the Russian national saint Aleksandr Yaroslavich Nevskiy.
At that time Belgrade boasted a strong Jewish Ladino-speaking Sephardic community mostly settled in the central Belgrade neighborhood called Dorćol.
But despite Kragujevac being the cultural center of Serbia at the time, Miloš Obrenović ordered for First Belgrade Gymnasium (grammar school) to be founded in Belgrade, its area called Dorćol (Dort-yol).

The inaugural Serbian Rugby League Championship was held on November 10, featuring teams Donji Dorćol Belgrade, Morava Belgrade, Novi Sad and Beli Orao Kruševac.
