Hinton's department was responsible for the design and construction of most of Britain's major nuclear plants, including Windscale, Capenhurst, Springfields and Dounreay.
In August 2009 it was revealed that household cleaners such as Cillit Bang and Mr. Muscle have been used to clean plutonium stains at the defunct Dounreay nuclear power station in Caithness, Scotland.
After promotion to captain, he was the Western Fleet’s senior engineering staff officer and, from 1970, commanded the nuclear reactor testing and training establishment at Dounreay before spending four years based at the Ministry of Defence in Bath as Deputy Director (Design) for marine engineering with the Director-General (Ships).
Following early research at Harwell in Oxfordshire, the Government in 1954 selected Dounreay in Caithness as the centre of research and development.

The Authority became a contractor for the NDA for the decommissioning work at Dounreay, Harwell, Windscale, Winfrith and the JET facilities at Culham.
